Paul Bangay’s 3 most important things when creating a garden

By

Paul Bangay is one of Australia’s best known and highly regarded landscape designers, sometimes referred to as the landscaper designer to the rich and famous. In over 25 years Paul Bangay has been busy creating some of Australia’s most beautiful, award-winning gardens, and written several books.

This video is a DIY gardener’s dream, as Deborah gets to hear Paul’s 3 key considerations when creating your garden.

1. STICK TO THE ONE STYLE

The connection to the house is important. People should research what kind of garden style they want ie formal, casual, European, Australian, and try to stick to the style you select rather than mix them up.

2. DON’T UNDER-SCALE

Paul feels Australians have trouble with scale when designing their gardens and tend to under-scale everything. Don’t put too many small things into any area. If you’re not sure of your sense of scale, put bigger things in but less of them. It will make more of a statement.

3. WORK OUT WHAT YOU WANT FROM YOUR PLANTS

Try to work out what you want your plants to do for you. Do you want them to be green and make you relax? Do you want to pick things? Do you want to see things flower? In a smaller garden the fragrance increases so consider what plants might create a lovely fragrance, sweet or a lush rainforest smell for example.

Although Deb feels designing your garden is much like styling your home, Paul comments that for some reason many people have more trouble styling their gardens than their homes. Paul’s suggestions are to look at other gardens where you can, read, and really research it beforehand.
